A planned gift to LINGUIST allows you to ensure that the LINGUIST List continues
to serve the discipline of linguistics while meeting your own financial and
personal objectives. These gifts can take many forms and enable you to make a
contribution to the LINGUIST LIST while leaving your own financial arrangements
untouched. A well-considered planned gift may enable you to:
- Fulfill your charitable wishes
- Receive lifetime income
- Take a significant income tax deduction
- Avoid capital gains tax
The simplest way of making a charitable planned gift to LINGUIST is through a
bequest in your will or living trust. Bequests are simple to arrange, offer
flexibility, and can reduce estate taxes. And with a gift through your will or
living trust, you retain full use of your gift property during your lifetime,
while still making a significant gift to the LINGUIST List
When considering this option, please note that LINGUIST operates under the 501c3
of Eastern Michigan University. Therefore, the legal name your attorney needs to
put in the will is "Eastern Michigan University for the exclusive use of the
LINGUIST List".
Bequests
A bequest is a gift made outright in an individual's will. From our point of
view, these are the simplest gifts to administer, for they allow us to use your
gift for urgent need as soon as they are received. To facilitate drafting your
will or trust, we provide the following language for your attorney:
I give, devise and bequeath to Eastern Michigan University for the exclusive use
of the LINGUIST List, the sum of ____________. (or, if leaving everything, just
state," the residue of my estate".
Percentage Bequest
You may want to designate a percentage of your estate for THE LINGUIST LIST. We
offer the following language to assist your attorney:
I give, devise and bequeath to Eastern Michigan University for exclusive use of
THE LINGUIST LIST, __________ % of my estate passing under this will after the
deduction of all debts, funeral expenses, but before the deduction of any
death, inheritance or estate taxes, it being my intention to exonerate this
bequest from contributing to the payment of any such taxes.
Gift Annuity
The charitable gift annuity supports THE LINGUIST LIST at the same time as it
provides guaranteed income for you. By transferring cash, securities or a
combination of the two to THE LINGUIST LIST, you receive a fixed annuity income
for the rest of your life and a tax deduction for part of your gift.
Pooled Income Fund
A pooled income fund functions much like a mutual fund. Participants receive a
pro-rated share of income earned by the fund, and it ensures that you or a
beneficiary receives an income for life. In addition to increasing income flow,
a gift to a pooled income fund provides saving on income tax and possibly on
estate and capital gains taxes.
Charitable Remainder Trust
Charitable remainder trusts are specially designed life-income plans custom made
to fit your needs. A gift to a charitable remainder trust allows you to make a
significant gift to THE LINGUIST LIST in your lifetime, while preserving an
annual income for yourself or your beneficiaries. There are two forms of
charitable remainder trusts: the unitrust, based on a fixed percentage of the
trust's assets, and the annuity trust, based on a fixed dollar amount payout.
Charitable Lead Trust
A charitable lead trust works in the opposite manner of a charitable remainder
trust. Instead of income flowing to you or your designated beneficiaries,
income is provided for THE LINGUIST LIST for a set period of time. The
charitable lead trust, which may be attractive to donors who are interested in
helping THE LINGUIST LIST complete a particular project, may reduce your gift
or estate taxes so that more assets may eventually be transferred to your
beneficiaries.
Real Estate
Gifts of appreciated real estate - a home, vacation property, condominium,
undeveloped land - may enable you to avoid significant tax liability.
Life Insurance
There are a number of ways to give a gift of life insurance. You can contribute
the policy to THE LINGUIST LIST, name THE LINGUIST LIST the beneficiary of the
policy or name THE LINGUIST LIST a successor beneficiary.
