UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH THE CENTRE FOR SPEECH TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH RESEARCH POSTS in CONVERSATIONAL MANAGEMENT and DIALOGUE ENGINEERING The Centre for Speech Technology Research is undertaking major new research projects in the field of speech based human-machine interaction, projects which will involve state-of-the-art speech recognition and synthesis technology. These new projects will address the key questions of how individuals can interact optimally with computer systems using voice, for applications in the home, the office and over the telephone. The research work will focus on the acoustic, phonetic, psycholinguistic and human factors aspects of human/computer interactions with spoken dialogue systems and will involve a wide range of large scale experimental surveys. Applicants are sought who hold (or expect to gain this year) a good Honours degree in Linguistics, Psychology, Mathematics or Statistics. Applications are invited for a Research Assistanship funded by the Cancer Research Campaign. The work will involve characterisations in acoustic- phonetic terms of how patient's speech has been effected by surgery leading to design of a workstation for use by speech therapists during post- operative monitoring and rehabilitaion. This is a collaborative project involving the University of Edinburgh and the West of Scotland Regional Plastic Surgery Unit at Canniesburn Hospital, Glasgow. Applicants should ideally have experience in the fields of acoustics, phonetics and signal processing. Salary will be at an appropriate point on the 1A Research Assistant scales (11,969 - 17,073) depending on qualifications and experience. The post is tenable for two years.
